Thinking of teaching?
So, you're thinking about teaching? Which of the following best describes you?
School-leaver
School-leavers will need to have a GCSE in Maths, English and Science (Grade C or better) and follow a university course leading to a degree qualification.
There are two options available:

Graduates
Graduates have two main options open to them, in order for them to teach:
The majority of post-graduates looking to get into teaching undertake a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). This generally takes one year as a full-time course or up to two years as a part-time course.
You can choose to train in a higher education institute, via flexible distance learning or in a school.
Some post-graduates enter teaching through the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP).
This is an employment-based route for those with relevant subject knowledge, gained as part of their degree.
In addition to your degree qualification, you must also have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade C in the GCSE examination in English Language, Mathematics and Science.
A small number of teachers come into teaching through the Teach First programme.
You would spend two years working in challenging secondary schools qualifying as a teacher while completing leadership training and work experience with leading employers.

Trained teachers
Trained teachers returning to teaching, after having been away from the profession for a number of years, may be interested in Returning to Teaching courses.
These courses are designed to update teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), who have taken a career break, on current developments in education and changes in the classroom, for example developments in the National Curriculum. They are intended to give the preparation and confidence necessary to return to the classroom.
Returning to Teaching courses generally receive Teacher Development Agency funding and the following financial incentives:
- a bursary of up to £150 per week (to a maximum of £1500)
- childcare funding of £150 per week per child under five and £70 per week per child from five to 14 (for up to 12 weeks).
