Newly qualified teachers (NQT) in Lambeth Schools
So, you've been appointed to one of our schools and are just starting out on your induction or, maybe, you've already done part of the induction somewhere else.
What do you need to do now?
NQT registration
You'll need to fully complete and return an NQT registration form to Lambeth within two weeks of the start of your Induction in Lambeth.
NQT induction training
You should encourage your headteacher or induction tutor to book you a place on either the primary or secondary NQT induction training that is offered by Lambeth.
Not only will this be a chance for you to get advice and information about things relating to your induction and teaching in general, but it will give you the opportunity to meet with fellow NQTs and share experiences and concerns with them.
Induction tutor training
You should ask your induction tutor to consider booking onto the induction tutor training that Lambeth offers whether they are new to the role, or they have been doing the role for a number of years.
This is because from September 2007 NQT assessment has been carried out against new professional standards for teachers that replace standards previously used.
If your school did not have an NQT last year, it may be worth asking your Induction Tutor if they know about this change.
If you have any problems or queries about registration or training, please contact Dave Coram at dcoram@lambeth.gov.uk or on 07956 127009.
NQT assessment
All NQT assessment is carried out against the Core Standards.
All newly qualified teachers must have assessment reports submitted for them, indicating whether you are on track to meet the requirements of induction, at the end of two and four terms (one and two old terms, for those still working in imperial!) of teaching, with a final report due after six terms (three old terms) of teaching.
For the majority of NQTs, this will mean assessments are due just before Christmas, just before Easter and just before the end of the academic year - you will be told when they are due when you register.
Please note that the registration and assessment procedure in Lambeth is now fully electronic. Paper registration and assessment forms should not be sent.
New versions of forms available in October 2008
Please be aware that there has just been a re-issuing of assessment forms by the DCSF to Local Authorities; we are currently in the process of digesting and dissecting them - the new forms will be available from the website in time for assessments due in October 2008.
The changes are cosmetic in nature, and will not require any changes in assessment 'habit' from those involved with completing the forms.
You should not use the forms that you can download from the website - they remain available so that NQTs and those new to the Induction Tutor role can see what an assessment report is like.
Problems during your induction period
If you encounter any problems at school during your induction period, that you are not able to resolve with your induction tutor or headteacher, please contact either:
Dave Coram (Teacher Recruitment Co-Ordinator)
Email: dcoram@lambeth.gov.uk
Tel: 07956 127009
Kevin Ronan (Lambeth designated contact for NQTs)
Email: kronan@lambeth.gov.uk
Tel: 020 7926 9829
If you make contact by e-mail, you are advised to send your initial message to both Dave and Kevin. This will enable you to get a response more quickly.
Schools should notify Dave and/or Kevin as soon as there is any concerns on their part with the progress of any individual Induction period, in order that the necessary support can be arranged as effectively as possible - it should not be left until the next assessment report for it to come to light.
