Early Years Foundation Stage requirements for training
The following summary points relate to the Early Years training requirements set out in the EYFS Statutory Framework and guidance.
- Adults looking after children must have appropriate qualifications, training, skills and knowledge (p20, EYFS Statutory Framework)
- Childminders must have attended a training course within six months of registration and must hold a current paediatric first aid certificate at the point of registration. (p31 as above)
- In registered settings other than childminding settings, all supervisors and managers must hold a full and relevant level 3 qualification (as defined by the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC)) and half of all other staff must hold a full and relevant level 2 qualification (as defined by CWDC).(p31 as above)
- All practitioners should have an up-to-date understanding of safeguarding children issues and be able to implement the safeguarding children policy and procedure appropriately.(p22 as above)
- At least one person who has a current paediatric first aid certificate must be on the premises at all times when children are present.(p26 as above)
- First aid training must be approved by the local authority and consistent with guidance set out in the Practice Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage .(May 2008: amendment to p26 as above)
- The [Paediatric First Aid] training leading to a certificate or a renewal certificate [must be] a minimum of 12 hours.(p23 EYFS Guidance)
- A continuously improving setting will have well-qualified and experienced staff who:
- are appropriately trained, with up-to-date skills and qualifications;
- are motivated and supported to further raise their skills and qualification level to level 3 and beyond; (p9 EYFS Guidance)
