Early years training and professional development
The vision is for early years practice to be recognised as a profession in its own right, along side teaching, social work and other professions that make up the wider children’s workforce.
This will enable employers in the early years sector to recruit and retain experienced practitioners and create an attractive career for new recruits.
A key aspect of achieving this will be the establishment of clear training, qualification and continuing professional development (CPD) pathways for the early years workforce. There is a proven link between qualification levels of the workforce and outcomes for children. (2004, The Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE).
Funding to support recruitment and training
Funding is in place to support the recruitment, training and retention of graduate leaders, called early years professionals (EYPs), to lead practice across the early years workforce. An EYP will lead the learning and development of children in every full day care setting by 2015, with two EYPs in settings in the most disadvantaged areas.
