Responsible pet ownership
This section provides information and advice on your responsibilties as a pet owner.
The Animal Welfare Act 2006 requires that you must take reasonable steps to ensure that the welfare needs of your pet are met. These include:
- the need for a suitable environment (place to live)
- the need for a suitable diet
- the need to express itself and behave normally
- the need to have appropriate company (be housed with, or apart from, other animals)
- the need to be protected from pain, injury, suffering and disease.
Micro chipping is an inexpensive way of permanently identifying your pet. The process is quick and painless and it is an effective method of permanently linking pets to their owners.
In warm weather, cars become ovens. Temperatures could soar to over 49ÂșC. You should never leave animals inside a car.
