Concerto sustainable energy project
Concerto is a European-wide sustainable energy research and development programme.
It provides us with funding to deliver projects that promote energy efficiency and the greater use of renewable energy schemes.
Now in its final year, the Concerto programme allows us to deliver innovative projects across the borough to the benefit of both residents and the environment.
Solar for schools
The solar for schools project is unique to Lambeth and has installed solar panels, for both hot water and electricity, at six primary schools across the borough. The schools also received training, lesson plans and ongoing support to involve parents and the wider community in ways to reduce their energy usage.
The project has been delivered in conjunction with our Children and Young People's Service, Building Schools for the Future and Carbon Descent. The schools can save up to £1,000 each year off their utility bills.
High rise estate refurbishment
The sustainable refurbishment of the Ethelred Estate was an ambitious project to create an outstanding example of how blocks of flats can be made to be highly energy efficient and dramatically improve the living conditions of residents.
Each of the three blocks on the estate were refurbished inside and out, including solar PV over-cladding to better insulate the building, to protect the concrete exterior from further deterioration and to transform the appearance of the building.
The solar PV panels have been chosen as they provide a means to generate renewable energy and, therefore, reduce the building's carbon footprint.
Other measures installed were double glazing, new ventilation systems, a combined heat and power plant, and new radiators with individual controls.
Impressively, the project has achieved an average 80 per cent reduction in the carbon footprint of an average three-bedroom flat in the blocks. Importantly, for the tenants, it has meant warmer, more comfortable homes that are cheaper to heat.
