Neighbourhood Enhancement Programme
We are working on a project to make the streets safer, greener and cleaner across 8 wards including Vassall, Oval, Stockwell, part of Herne Hill, Coldharbour, Ferndale, Larkhall and Clapham Old Town.
Why have we chosen these neighbourhoods?
We have chosen these neighbourhoods for the first programme of improvements because of the high number of road safety accidents in the area and the links with existing local projects which this scheme will build upon and complement.
To make sure that you are fully engaged we are taking a cooperative approach to finding out your views and we have asked a Lambeth community group, the Stockwell Partnership, to engage with residents throughout the project to ensure that the things that are important to you are considered.
What improvements will we see in the area?
Improvements could include the following where practical and depending on local priorites and funding:
- measures to reduce road danger e.g. 20 mph zones better access for cyclists and facilities such as secure cycle parking
- cycle training
- car clubs
- tree planting and food growing
- removal of street clutter such as unnecessary bollards and signs
- new disabled parking bays and facilities to improve access such as dropped kerbs
As a number of benefits will be delivered at one time it will achieve better value for money for your community.
Why are we doing this?
Our aim is to make improvements in line with our transport strategy to:
- promote sustainable, healthy travel behaviour
- improve air quality
- reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured in road collisions
- reduce Lambeth's CO2 emissions.
Latest update on the project
Stockwell Partnership undertook a stage 1 community mapping exercise for the project between 17 Septemberand 20 December 2011.
A total of 31 community mapping events were held. The aim was to gather initial views from the community on their local area as a starting point for developing some design ideas.
Neighbourhood Enhancement Consultation Outcomes
Road safety, cycle lanes, tree planting and parking were some of the issues identified and requested from the consultation, the main issues included. For more information on the methodology, publicity and outcomes please click on the link below.
What is the project timetable?
This first neighbourhood enhancement project will be delivered over 2-3 financial years. Year one (2011/12) will involve design and consultation work, with years two and three (2012/4) focusing on construction. This programme is principally funded by Transport for London.
