New developments in Brockwell Park

Brockwell Park restoration

A swan in Brockwell ParkLambeth Council is working with a wide range of partners through the Brockwell Park Management Advisory Committee (BPMAC) to secure the long-term restoration and sustainable development of Brockwell Park.

One aspect of this vision has been securing £3.5 million in July 2008 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) through their 'Parks for People England' grant scheme, which is jointly supported by the HLF and the Big Lottery Fund(BiG).

This grant, match funded with over £1 million from Lambeth Council, will finance the repair, replacement and restoration of the heritage, community and cultural elements of the park, alongside funding from other sources for improving play, sports and access to wildlife.

Hertitage Lottery Fund logoCurrent proposals for the park's restoration include relaying paths to make them level and safe, repairing existing toilets, pergolas and shelters and replacing other structures such as fences and railings. Proposals for the ponds in Brockwell Park include adding new bridges, restoring traditional landscaping and vistas, and selective thinning of trees to improve light and access.

The park's restoration will also involve new boundary railings to create a uniform heritage feel to the park and improve public safety. Under these same proposals, the entrances to the park at the Lido, on Brixton Water Lane and Arlingford Road will also be enhanced and made more secure.

It is also planned to replace the old paddling pool which is coming to the end of its natural life. A new wet and general play area will be created, providing year round use along with new tree plantings to give shade and improve the setting without impeding on wildlife and heritage.

Concurrent with improvements to the paddling pool will be a redesigned children's playground, which will be easier to maintain and be better integrated into the overall park.

For information on the restoration proposals for Brockwell Park, and progress on the HLF application as well as other developments, contact Lambeth Parks on 020 7926 9000 or at parks@lambeth.gov.uk.

Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses

Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses is a project operating in partnership with Lambeth Council which manages the old greenhouses within the centre of Brockwell Park.

Green Pennant Award logoThe Greenhouses are one of Lambeth's two Green Pennant Award sites, having won this prestigious award for the first time in 2009. A Green Pennant recognises the work of community groups to help manage local open spaces, and is part of the Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for quality parks and green spaces.

The group works with a wide range of stakeholders including local schools, residents and with the homeless charity St Mungo's. These groups have opportunities to participate in community horticulture, urban conservation and biodiversity projects in Brockwell Park and within the wider community.

Gardens in Brockwell ParkThe greenhouses are used to grow seasonal fruits and vegetables, medicinal herbs and decorative flowers, which are then sold to generate revenue for the maintenance and development of the greenhouses.

Help us look after Brockwell Park

Trees in Brockwell Park at sunsetLambeth Parks and Greenspaces manages Brockwell Park and it is patrolled by the Lambeth Park Ranger Service. The park comes under the area patrolled by Herne Hill, Tulse Hill and Thurlow Park Neighbourhood Teams of the Lambeth Borough Police, who work in close partnership with Lambeth Council, Park Rangers and the Friends of Brockwell Park to ensure that the park provides everybody with safe and welcoming environment.

Brockwell Park welcomes responsible dog walkers, but there are dog free areas such as the children's play area, paddling pool and sports facilities such as the tennis courts and BMX track. This is for the comfort and safety of children and their carers, and also helps to protect local wildlife.
