Green Flag Award
Milkwood Community Park is one of Lambeth's six Green Flag Award-winning parks. It was the first open space in Lambeth to win a Green Flag Award, and has now held this prestigious title for a record four years in succession.
Since 2003 Milkwood Residents' Association, Lambeth Council, London and Quadrant Housing Association and community consultants have been working in close partnership to secure significant inward investment in order to regenerate
the park. Their efforts resulted in transforming what used to be a rather bland site into a quality green space that meets local needs and community aspirations. To date over £550,000 has been invested in Milkwood Community Park so that it offers people of all ages and interests a wide range of facilities for play, sport and relaxation.
The Green Flag Award continues to recognise and celebrate the considerable achievements made by residents and the council to provide the local community with a green space we can all be proud of.
The Milkwood Residents' Association represents those living around and using the park, and continues to play a major role in its sustainable management and development for present and future generations. To contact or join the Association, or to find out more about their work, telephone 020 7207 9530 or email: m.r.assoc@ntlworld.com.
A park for people, nature and learning
Milkwood Community Park is bounded on three sides by schools and nurseries, enabling it to offer children and young adults with a safe place for play and learning. To the east is St. John's Community Hall, which contains a popular infant's nursery, and to the south is Jessop School, a primary and nursery school for children aged 3 to 11 years.
To the north of Milkwood Community Park is The Michael Tippett School, a Special Education Needs (SEN) school first opened on this site on 25th February 2008. It was the first school in Lambeth to be completed under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, and the first SEN school in England built under BSF. As well as state of the art facilities for pupils and staff, the school also boasts a large 'green roof', made up of a living carpet of Sedum plants, which at a total area of 1800 m2 makes it one of the largest green roofs in Lambeth and on any school in the UK.
This green roof helps increase local biodiversity, and complements the ongoing creation of areas of wildflower meadow, and the planting of native trees and hedging, in Milkwood Community Park itself.
