Award-winning Vauxhall Park
Vauxhall Park is a charming Victorian park with a rich history, located between Vauxhall and Stockwell and serving a diverse and vibrant local community. It is one of Lambeth's six Green Flag Award sites, winning this prestigious award for the first time in 2007.
Vauxhall Park was first created by a special Act of Parliament in 1888 on land whose history can be traced back to the sixteenth century. A number of houses originally stood on the site of the park, including one occupied by Henry Fawcett (1833-1884), a famous statesman and Postmaster General. Vauxhall Park was laid out by the landscape architect Fanny Rollo Wilkinson, one of the few women in this profession at that time, on behalf of the Kryle Society. The Society was originally founded in 1878 for 'bringing beauty home to the people' and their treasurer was Octavia Hill (1838-1912), one of the founders of the National Trust. The park was officially opened to the public by HRH the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) on 7 July 1890.
Vauxhall Park retains a number of its original features together with some new ones which serve modern users of all ages and interests. These include a popular children's playground, a Montessori Nursery and One O'Clock Club, a set of formal gardens, a new lavender garden (laid out on the site of an old bowling green) and a splendid little model village. Vauxhall Park has recently benefited from works to help protect its unique character, such as new boundary railings along Fentiman Road which, combined with a new café near the south-western entrance, has completely transformed its feel and character.
Help us look after Vauxhall Park
Vauxhall Park is managed by Lambeth Parks and Greenspaces and is part of the North Lambeth Parks Area. It is in the area patrolled by the Oval Safer Neighbourhoods Team of Lambeth Borough Police, who work in partnership with the council and Friends of Vauxhall Park to make sure the site and local area are safe and welcoming for everybody.
Please remember that while Vauxhall Park welcomes responsible dog owners and walkers, some areas are dog free, such as the children's playground and the formal gardens. This is for the comfort and safety of children and their carers, and for the benefit of local wildlife. A large dog area is provided along the western side of the park to allow dogs to be exercised off the lead without disturbing others.
