We investigate noise and pollution complaints, provide comment on planning applications in terms of noise and pollution prevention, regulate certain industrial processes and monitor and report on air quality.
Travel Without Polluting aims to raise awareness of the link between the mode of transport used and its effect on air quality.
We monitor air quality throughout the borough and we publish the results annually.
The Clean Air Act, 1993, introduced a wide range of new regulations such as those which control smoke emissions and the height of chimneys and those relating to the content and composition of motor fuels. Under certain conditions we must approve chimney height.
Contaminated land is land that contains substances either on the surface or below ground that present a risk of significant harm to human health or to our wider environment, including water resources, the local ecosystem and structures.

We authorise prescribed industrial processes under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
As well as noise, our service investigates complaints about other forms of pollution, including smoke from bonfires, smells and fumes from car paint spraying.
On 1 July 2007 smoking in enclosed public places and workplaces became a thing of the past and against the law. Public places and workplaces includes all offices, warehouses, workshops, pubs, clubs, theatres, shops, restaurants, taxis, minicabs, hotels and hostels.
Our officers investigate certain water supplies, including private water supplies and bathing water.
