Climate change
The world's scientific community is now agreed that human-induced climate change is a reality. In the UK this will mean more unpredictable weather, and we can expect more extremes in climate, from long droughts to dangerous storms.
About CO²
The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is still increasing as we use more energy in our daily lives. CO2 is the most important of the greenhouse gases and its emissions are creating dangerous consequences in the earth's ecosystems. Sea levels are rising, primarily as a result of melting ice at the poles, the probability of intense weather events is increasing and negative impacts on our health are already being experienced.
Expected consequences
Amongst the expected impacts of climate change for Londoners are:
- wetter winters with more intense rainfall
- drier, but less predictable summers
- rising sea levels and increased risk of flooding
- increases in food poisoning, heat strokes and skin cancer
- greater problems with insect and plant pests
