Clapham Old Town

Visualisation of the new Clapham Old Town

The Clapham Old Town project was previously known as Clapham Gateway.

We are planning to improve Clapham Old Town for local people, businesses and visitors by:

  • challenging the current use of space
  • creating better connected areas
  • ensuring accessibility for the greatest number of people
  • maximising environmental and road safety benefits
  • reducing the dominance of traffic
  • improving pedestrian and cycle access
  • looking at bus standing facilities.

The project is managed through a group of local stakeholders. We have appointed Urban Initiatives, an independent consulting firm, to help us consult with locals and produce some design options for the project.

An update on the project

In December 2011, we agreed with Transport for London (TfL) a potential layout for bus standing and stopping in Old Town, The Pavement and Clapham Common Northside. Since then we have been further developing the scheme with our design team comprising Urban Initiatives and Marks Barfield Architects.

In March 2012 we held the first meeting of the Clapham Old Town Design Reference Group (DRG). The DRG is an informal group of Clapham residents and businesses who have taken an active interest in the scheme’s development. A second DRG meeting was held towards the end of March and this focussed on the evolving proposals for parking, loading and bus standing/stopping.

In the meantime, at the request of TfL, the project team is undertaking a review of the scheme concept. In particular, the review will include a response the following questions:

  • What are the problems, opportunities and issues you are looking to address?
  • What are the scheme objectives and benefits you want to realise (e.g. connectivity, vehicle dominance & speeds, personal security, social exclusion, collisions, footfall, accessibility, conditions for cycling, pedestrians, public transport interchange, etc)?
  • What evidence has been used to determine the objectives (traffic counts, movement surveys, collision analysis, parking surveys, land use surveys etc)?
  • How does the proposed design(s) relate to the stated objectives and evidence?
  • How does the proposed design seek to accommodate the existing functions and enhance the character of the area?
  • What engagement has taken place to help inform the objectives and scheme design?
  • Explain the rationale for any specific elements of the scheme that may differ from the overall objectives, and/or clarify if there is any conflict with MTS/borough objectives (e.g. the proposal would require mature tree removal)?

An update to the above will be available at the end of July 2012

The Project Team will try to publish as much information as possible providing greater transparency in accordance with the Council’s aspirations. There will be regular updates to this page every 3 months; providing access to minutes and plans.

The next DRG meeting is scheduled for mid-May.
