Clapham Old Town
We are planning to improve Clapham Old Town area (previously know as Clapham Gateway project) for local people, businesses and visitors by:
- challenging the current use of space
- creating better connected areas
- ensuring accessibility for the greatest number of people
- maximising environmental and road safety benefits
- reducing the dominance of traffic
- improving pedestrian and cycle access
- looking at bus standing facilities.
Project update
We received overwhelming support for the scheme following last year's consultation. Since then we have listened to your comments and improved the designs to provide additional cycle facilities and ensure there is no overall loss of parking / loading and unloading facilities.
We are also proposing that the current 30 minute free short-term parking is not only retained in the area but increased to 45 minutes free short-term parking.

Subject to statutory consultation, construction works are planned to start on 23 May 2013 and we aim to complete the entire scheme by the end of February 2014. However, if there are unforeseen delays during construction, this date is likely to change to the end of March 2014.
To assist us in developing a programme of works, we have met with local businesses in the area to understand access and servicing needs. We have made every effort to consider the comments made and the works programme, which broadly represents the feedback from businesses.

As you will appreciate, the construction of this major scheme is challenging but we will work with our contractors to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. We will be in contact with local residents and businesses during the construction programme to provide advance notice of any works which will take place in front of their premises. Our contractors are currently working on a scheme in Waterloo and are very experienced in working with local residents and businesses to minimise disruption and accommodate their needs.
