Background information

Billboard in Brixton

Prior to the masterplanning process, lots of research had already been done to gather information about  Brixton. The issues it faces and what local people think could help make it better.

All the work was pulled together into a document called 'What we Know'. This formed the basis for the first phase of masterplan work - consultation and development of the Visioning Framework.

Phase 2 of the masterplanning process was to consult on the ideas in the Visioning Framework in order to develop the final masterplan.

The ‘Visioning framework’ document – January 2008

The London Development Agency (LDA) and Lambeth Council commissioned a plan for Brixton to identify regeneration priorities and development opportunities in the town centre.

The ‘What we know’ document – July 2007

Lots of surveys and studies have been done already to gather information about Brixton, the issues it faces and what local people think should happen in the area. This was collated into a document outlining the background to development in Brixton, called 'What we know'.

This document includes information on:

  • socio-demographic data on Brixton (eg who lives and works in Brixton)
  • the results of previous consultations and research
  • relevant planning policy
  • examples of what has worked in other urban regeneration areas in the UK.

Reducing crime has topped the list of local priorities in surveys over the last few years. People have also told us that:

  • the market is central to shopping in Brixton
  • the highstreet is too overcrowded
  • you like Brixton’s mixed and multicultural community
  • we need more facilities for young people
  • public space should be improved
  • we need more family housing
  • business support and marketing would help local entrepreneurs.

A series of reports were also written which covered more technical information, such as:

  • Brixton's economic performance
  • land ownership and prices
  • demands on space
  • transport usage.
