Brixton Town Centre Masterplan

London is one of the world's great cities and is constantly evolving. Brixton is an iconic and internationally renowned part of London and is a fantastic town centre with a rich history, unique identity, great vibe and, most importantly, a strong community. We want to make sure that, with the exciting changes happening in Brixton, these things are protected and the best things about Brixton aren't lost.

The masterplan is a plan for the town centre that sets out what type of development should happen in the future. It will be used as the basis for planning guidance and will guide investment in the physical environment from the public and private sectors. It will set out a number of projects that will make the most of opportunities to improve the town centre and tackle some long-term issues.

It will cover almost everything that happens in our town centre including buildings, housing, shopping, entertainment, leisure and sports facilities, health and education centres, office and business space, parks and open spaces, transport and the streetscape itself. So if you live or work in Brixton, or even just come as a visitor, it is bound to affect you somehow.

The ‘What’s your future Brixton?’ consultation

Between August 2007 and March 2008 we asked for your input on the development of the Brixton 'masterplan'. A number of activities and events took place, including market stalls, arts projects, workshops, roadshows and a questionnaire which over 1,500 people completed.

The masterplan consultation is now over and we'd like to thank those of you who have spared the time to take part. All comments have been carefully considered during the development of the masterplan. We anticipate that the masterplan will be considered by the council's Cabinet committee in December. More information including all masterplan documents will be available here on the website prior to this meeting.

Background information

Lots of research has been done already to gather information about Brixton, the issues it faces and what local people think could help make it better. Work was undertaken at the start of the masterplanning process to pull all of this information together and to start thinking about what the options might be for the future.
