Evelyn Grace Academy, Shakespeare Road

Lambeth Council, in partnership with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and ARK Schools are building a brand new, non-selective, non-denomination academy on Shakespeare Road in Brixton. This will help to meet the urgent need for secondary school places in the borough.

While the Academy is being built, a temporary school will be in operation between September 2008 and June 2009, based at the current Brixton Social Education Centre at Somerleyton Road, Brixton. 

Environmental service fleet depot move

The proposed new school has necessitated moving the council's environmental and transport fleets from the Shakespeare Road depot. The fleets include refuse collection, recycling, street cleansing and other important services.

The relocation of the environmental vehicle fleets is essential to allow the Academy to go ahead and to enable the council to deliver sustainable environmental services in the borough. Following a review of many relocation sites, the fleet is being temporarily housed at four locations until a permanent site is decided. These are Shakespeare Road, Brixton (utilising the remaining space not used by the Academy), Mahatma Gandhi Industrial Estate on Milkwood Rood, Brixton, Angela Davies Industrial Estate on Somerleyton Road, Brixton and Vale Street depot in Norwood.

The ultimate aim is to find and develop a single, permanent site for the vehicles, facilitating the efficient and sustainable operation of all environmental service fleets.

The Cabinet decided on Option B, which involves the development of one single, permanent site for all fleets to facilitate the efficient and sustainable operation of all environmental services.  The Cabinet will decide as to the location of this site in late November.

Until a permanent site is ready, separate elements of the fleet will be temporarily housed at the four locations quoted above.
