Future Brixton

An artist's impression of Windrush SquareBrixton is a vibrant town centre known for its market, music and distinct style.

Several projects, including the development of a masterplan, a new public space called Windrush Square, and high-profile public arts and creative lighting schemes, will help to regenerate the area and improve the quality of life for local people.

About the Brixton masterplan

Plans for making big improvements to Brixton town centre over the next fifteen years have been approved by the Council's Cabinet.

Your priorities for Brixton have led to two key themes emerging from consultation - sustainability and retaining the unique character of Brixton.

You can read the Future Brixton masterplan on our 'About the masterplan' page.

Town centre road works update

Works have continued throughout 2009 to transform Brixton Road. Transport for London (TfL) and Lambeth Council have been working together on this project. For more information on the road works visit www.tfl.gov.uk/windrushsquare or call 0845 305 1234.

The new improved Windrush Square

You gave us your opinions on a shortlist of suggestions for a name for Brixton's newest public space and the name Windrush Square was chosen.

Throughout the masterplan consultation you asked that the new square should be safer and a more secure space. Safety is therefore at the heart of the design and includes improved lighting, more CCTV coverage and better sightlines so that anyone walking through the area can see who is in the square and what they are doing.

The Ritzy cinema and the Tate library will remain open as usual while work takes place.

Windrush Square is being developed in partnership with Transport for London (TfL). To find out more visit www.tfl.gov.uk/windrushsquare or call 0845 305 1234.

Arts and lighting projects

Over the summer of 2009 you helped us to decide where in Brixton could benefit from new public artworks. As a result the Future Brixton team has been developing a programme of new art projects across the town centre working with local artists to produce unique art pieces.

You can find out more about the projects on our public arts and creative lighting page.
