Future Brixton
Brixton is a vibrant town centre and is known for its market, music and distinct style. However, like many town centres, Brixton also has several key issues which need to be addressed such as unemployment, congestion, limited retail choices and a limited transport interchange.
Several projects, including the development of a masterplan, a new public space at Brixton central square and a new secondary school, will help to regenerate the area and improve the quality of life for local people.
A draft 'masterplan' has been developed to help Brixton make the most of the opportunities available and protect its unique character and heritage. The masterplan is a long-term strategic plan for central Brixton and is shortly due for consideration by council's Cabinet committee.
Brixton Road and Coldharbour Lane improvements
The quality of the streets and congestion within the town 
centre are key issues being addressed with a number of improvements. Specific initiatives include widening of pavements, reducing street clutter and replacing worn and broken paving.
Brixton central square is an ambitious project to create a safe, high-quality public space reflecting our unique and diverse community. This is a partnership project between Lambeth Council, Transport for London, Design for London and the local community.
Lambeth Council, in partnership with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and ARK Schools are planning an academy on Shakespeare Road in Brixton. This will help to meet the urgent need for secondary school places in the borough.
Other town centre projects
In partnership with various stakeholders, Lambeth Council is developing a number of exciting projects which will bring further physical improvements to Brixton town centre and kick-start the regeneration process. Improvements include upgrades to Brixton Market stalls, a public arts project, a new creative lighting strategy and the installation of pop-up pissoirs for night-time use. Further updates will be added as these projects develop.
