Future Clapham

Clapham Library artist impressionThe planning applications for the landmark Future Clapham scheme have been approved by Lambeth planners.

Following a period of statutory public consultation the council’s development partner, Cathedral Group, has been given the go-ahead for the multi-million pound development which will deliver new, high quality public facilities for Clapham at no cost to the tax-payer. The development will also deliver 199 new homes.

It involves the redevelopment of two sites in Clapham:

  • Mary Seacole House, a disused office block on Clapham High Street, will be re-developed to provide a state-of-the-art community library, healthcare centre and 136 new homes.
  • Clapham Leisure Centre site will be transformed to create a brand new facility - including a six-lane, 25 metre pool, a 100 station gym and a four-court sports hall – as well as 63 apartments.

The Mary Seacole House development is subject to final approval by the Greater London Authority, a decision is expected by the end of April.

Further information about the scheme can be found in the latest edition of the Future Clapham newsletter or on our About Future Clapham page.

Alternative local leisure facilities

Clapham Leisure Centre will need to close so that the new leisure centre, with more facilities, can be built on the same site. The council has reviewed the availability of alternative facilities in the area so that Clapham customers can continue to take part in leisure activities whilst the new centre is being built.

All school swimming programmes will continue at a number of local pools. General leisure activities such as swimming, exercise classes and healthy living programmes will be provided at other leisure centres nearby - such as Brixton and Ferndale. You can read more about these in the latest newsletter.

Further information about leisure in Lambeth can be found in the Sport and Recreation pages.
