The council's Future Clapham development partner, Cathedral Group, has received confirmation of funding including Kickstart funding from the Homes and Communities Agency.

Following the confirmation, Cathedral Group are now progressing development work on the leisure centre site and the centre closed on Friday 15 January 2010.

We will ensure that we keep Clapham residents and leisure centre users up to date about important dates, as well as the availability of alternative facilities such as the Brixton Recreation Centre.

Mary Seacole House demolition update

Preparations have already begun for the demolition of Mary Seacole House.

The Kickstart funding of £12.7 million is run by the Homes and Communities Agency to support regeneration schemes through the recession. Future Clapham is one of only a few schemes across the country to receive it.

The application for funding was made by Cathedral Group, the Council’s development partner and will support the residential element of the overall scheme.

The development includes a community library, healthcare centre and leisure centre. All of these new public facilities will be more accessible, of higher quality and provide for a wider range of services for residents to enjoy.

The Future Clapham scheme involves the redevelopment of two key sites in Clapham:

  • Mary Seacole House will be rebuilt to provide a new community library, healthcare centre and new homes
  • The existing leisure centre and depot site will be redeveloped to create a new leisure centre.

Planning applications for the scheme were approved by Planning Committee in April 2009.

Further information about the scheme can be found in the latest edition of the Future Clapham newsletter or on our About Future Clapham page.

Alternative local leisure facilities

Clapham Leisure Centre will need to close so that the new leisure centre, with more facilities, can be built on the same site. The council has reviewed the availability of alternative facilities in the area so that Clapham customers can continue to take part in leisure activities whilst the new centre is being built.

All school swimming programmes will continue at a number of local pools. General leisure activities such as swimming, exercise classes and healthy living programmes will be provided at other leisure centres nearby - such as Brixton and Ferndale. You can read more about these in the latest newsletter.
