'Streatham Hub' leisure development

Reception areaPlans to transform leisure facilities in Streatham have taken another step closer. The developer, Tesco, has submitted revisions to the original planning application of 2002 that will mean the whole scheme, including new housing, could be complete a year earlier than planned.

View of poolRevised plans include the proposal to provide a temporary bus garage. This means the swimming pool will need to close for less time than previously thought, while the new leisure centre could open slightly earlier than planned. Estimates suggest the swimming pool would close in Autumn 2010 and the new leisure centre could open Summer 2011. The existing ice rink will remain open until the new ice rink is ready to use. You can find out more about planning applications on the Planning pages.

Tesco have released a tender for the leisure component of the scheme and bids are due in at the end of October 2008.
As well as new leisure facilities, a new supermarket and affordable housing will be provided for the area. There will also be a new transport hub linking road and rail - all of which will help to revitalise the south of Streatham.

What are the new facilities and when will they be open?

The Streatham Hub development will include:

  • a brand new ice rink and swimming pool
  • a state-of-the-art sports and leisure centre
  • 250 new homes – 87 of which are earmarked for social housing
  • over 400 new jobs in Streatham
  • a major new transport interchange – with a new bus terminal and an improved train station
  • a major new Tesco store
  • improvements to the local environment and local roads
  • car parking facilities for 438 vehicles.

When will construction begin?

Estimated key milestones are:

  • construction on site could commence in January 2009
  • new bus terminal to be completed by June 2010
  • in the interim we have estimated that the new leisure centre could open by September/October 2011.

Will the leisure services close down whilst new facilities are being built?

We are looking to minimise disruption to residents and our priority is to make sure both the ice rink and swimming pool remain open until new facilities have been built. Over the coming months we will be working with stakeholder and user groups on the issue of continuity of service provision.
