Stage 2 consultation – June - August 2008

Following on from the first stage of consultation for the Future Norwood project, Lambeth Council, along with its consultants EDAW, prepared three 'masterplan' options for West Norwood.

Over the summer these options were discussed with residents and businesses. They were intended to start debate and discussion on what was important to the public for West Norwood.

Stage 1 consultation – January - May 2008

Earlier this year we talked to residents and businesses about their experiences of Norwood – what they liked, what they didn't like and how they thought it could change for the better.

Community workshops - April 2008

MeetingA community workshop was held on Thursday 3 April and Tuesday 8 April. These were run by EDAW, who are developing the masterplan, and were designed to test some of the earlier research and understand local people's aspirations for the area.

You can download the presentation from this event here. More detailed feedback will be published on this website as soon as possible.

Business Survey

During April and May, we visited 120 businesses in the local area. Thirty-seven of these responded to a short survey, which has helped us to better understand the needs and concerns of Norwood's business community and how the masterplan might support them.

Some of the headline feedback from the survey:

  • almost half of the businesses who responded had traded in the local area for more than 10 years
  • 39% of respondents chose 'Loyal customers' as the greatest advantage to being based in West Norwood
  • 47% of respondents stated that 'High numbers of boarded up shops or unused buildings' was a disadvantage to trading in the area
  • other common disadvantages suggested were the cost of business premises, parking restrictions and crime
  • ¾ of respondents said that their customers mainly came from the West Norwood area

Norwood Expo - February 2008

The third and final pilot of the People First Expo's was held in Norwood on Saturday 9 February at Crown Lane Primary school. The theme for the Expo was 'Regenerating Norwood'.

The event was well attended by many local organizations and Jo Negrini, Divisional Director of Regeneration and Enterprise, gave a presentation on the future plans for Norwood and the upcoming masterplanning process.

People were also encouraged to take part in a "who wants to be a millionaire style" questionnaire complete with electronic voting pads. The 30 participants were asked a range of questions about their views on living, working and playing in the West Norwood area and the results appeared immediately on a large overhead screen. Some of the headline feedback from voters was:

  • 45% thought that the sense of community was the best thing about living in West Norwood
  • 43% thought that West Norwood needed more sports and leisure facilities
  • 27% would like to see wider pavements and pedestrian crossings and the use of public art and creative lighting to improve the local area.

More feedback was also obtained from residents who attended the masterplan stand and discussed matters directly with the team.
