Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea (VNEB)
The 195 hectares of the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea (VNEB)Opportunity Area is a major opportunity for the local communty and the whole of London. By 2030 Nine Elms aims to be an exciting and distinctive quarter of central London providing 16,000 new homes and up to 25,000 new jobs.
The area is framed by Lambeth Bridge through Vauxhall to Battersea Power Station and Chelsea Bridge. Its central London riverside location makes it a prestigious destination for international investment.
Area redevelopments involved are varied in nature and will lead to many different types of improvements - more details of which can be found at the bottom of this page.
We think this is a great opportunity for existing residents, business owners and visitors but it is important that you contribute to how developments happen and let us know how they will affect you. If you wish to be kept updated about developments in the opportunity area please join the VNEB mailing list.
The VNEB Strategy Board
The VNEB Strategy Board, established in 2010, is in place to direct the regeneration of the VNEB area, coordinate infrastructure improvements and make sure that opportunities are created for local people, such as jobs.
The Strategy Board is co-chaired by the leaders of Lambeth and Wandsworth councils and is attended by officers of the public authorities and major landowners. The other board members are:
Landowner members
- Ballymore
- Berkeley/St James Group
- Covent Garden Market Authority
- National Grid
- Royal Mail
- Sainsbury's plc
- CIT
- CLS
Public sector members
- Wandsworth Council
- Lambeth Council
- Transport for London
- Homes and Communities Agency
- Mayor of London
The governance structure can be viewed on p12 of the VNEB Opportunity Area Planning Framework and consists of the board and a series of subject-specific working groups and subgroups.
A number of events and activities are taking place to encourage local residents, businesses, visitors and commuters to have their say on the Nine Elms regeneration area.
In addition, we are developing a supplementary planning document for the Vauxhall and Albert Embankment area, which will set out the kinds of development that we want to see. For full information, visit the Vauxhall SPD web pages.
VNEB developments
A number of developments are coming forward throughout the opportunity area. A tariff will be applied to all development to help fund a range of infrastructure investment requirements.
Benefits of regeneration
The benefits of regeneration include:
- A new Tube station on Wandsworth Road near Sainsbury’s which will improve access to the underground for people living and working in the Vauxhall, Oval, Nine Elms and South Lambeth areas.
- Up to 25,000 new jobs are expected to be created in new developments including shops and offices.
- Around 50 acres of new public spaces - street improvements, parkland, and a new river walk benefiting cyclists and pedestrians.
- Improved bus, rail and tube services, including improvements to the Vauxhall interchange.
- The new stations (there are two planned; one on Wandsworth Road at Nine Elms and one at Battersea) will also be linked to existing bus routes enabling local people to easily access the Tube network. There will also be less pressure on Vauxhall station.
- Nearby will be a redeveloped New Covent Garden Market area called The Garden, a new US Embassy and a redeveloped Battersea Power Station.
- Two new passenger piers on the Thames for riverboats and also a potential extension of the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme.
