Clinical waste
You can receive a clinical waste collection from your home. We do not provide a commercial clinical collection service.
Clinical waste is defined in the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992. It means any waste which consists wholly or partly of:
- human or animal tissue
- blood or bodily fluids
- excretions
- drugs or other pharmaceutical products
- swabs or dressings
- syringes, needles or other sharp instruments
which unless rendered safe may prove hazardous to any person coming into contact with it. And any other waste arising from medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical or similar practice, investigation, treatment, care teaching or research, or the collection of blood for transfusion, being waste which may cause infection to any person coming into contact with it.
Clinical waste is mainly produced by hospitals, health clinics, doctors' surgeries and veterinary practices, but also comes from residential homes, nursing homes and private households.

Commercial waste collections
We do not provide a commercial clinical collection service. Businesses producing clinical waste must provide a declaration as to whether the waste is hazardous, and if so must provide a hazardous waste consignment note under the provision of the Hazardous Waste (England) Regulations 2005. Hazardous waste producers are reminded that in most circumstances they will need to register their premises, annually, with the Environment Agency.
