Adoption - Frequently Asked Questions
Am I too old to adopt?
Your age will not pose a problem, providing there is no concern that you will not survive throughout the years of the child's dependence.
How long does the adoption process take?
The whole procedure from initial enquiry through to approval should not take more than eight months.
See the timescales for applications page for further information.
How long does it take for a child to be placed once my application is approved?
It depends very much on the age, background or particular needs of the child you are looking for.
What accommodation do I need?
You must have room for the child.
Do I need to own my own home?
Not at all, your current accommodation just has to be judged suitable for a child.
Do I need a certain income level to adopt?
No, every case is treated individually and you may be eligible for financial support.
Can I still get help and support after a child is placed with me?
Of course. We're more than happy to offer help for as long as you need it.
Do your checks really need to be so rigorous?
The checks may seem intrusive, but the welfare of children in our care always comes first. This means we have to carry out in-depth checks to ensure your suitability to adopt.
Who makes the decisions regarding health issues?
We are guided by a specialist medical adviser on all health matters.
Who is eligible to apply?
There are many people who are eligible to adopt. Please have a look at our eligibility page.
