Independent Reviewing Service for Child Protection

This service is made up of social workers and their support staff.

They are employed by Lambeth Social Services and are based at 392 Brixton Road.

The main aim of this service is to provide an independent chair for all initial and review child protection conferences.

The term 'independent' means that the person chairing the meeting has not been involved in the day to day decision-making with the child or family.

The service aims to make sure that effective child protection plans are made if the child is on the child protection register and that family support plans are made if the child is not on the register.

Who is the service for?

All children and young people have a right to feel safe and be protected.

The child protection independent reviewing service deals with families where a decision has been made by Social Services to call an initial child protection conference.

They help make decisions at these meetings as to whether the child or children are:

  • at risk of significant harm
  • placed on the child protection register.

Being placed on the child protection register means that Social Services and other child protection agencies have to regularly review the child or the family's circumstances.

What does the service do?

The child protection independent reviewing service:

  • chairs all pre-birth, initial and review child protection conferences
  • makes sure effective child protection plans are put in place
  • ensures that case conferences are held when they should be and that all the relevant people are invited to them
  • provides specialist advice on child protection issues
  • holds a register of children placed on the child protection register and keeps this up to date
  • makes sure other local authorities and agencies are told when a child on the register moves to another local authority area.
