Exemplar energy efficiency project

Drawing of how building may look with new claddingFollowing on from the success of the green roof project the council put together another bid for funding from the Regional Housing Pot for 2007/2008. The council’s bid was successful and we have been awarded £6.8m grant funding to undertake an exemplar energy efficiency project on the Brittany, Ward and Elkington Point tower blocks.

The scheme aims to provide decent homes inside exemplar energy efficiency buildings. The scheme will improve the tower blocks by:

  • introducing cladding and Photo voltaic (PV) panels to improve insulation and drastically reduce future maintenance
  • replace windows with high performance double glazed units, which will contribute to improved thermal performance
  • introduce colour and design to improve visual impact
  • achieve the decent home standard to all tower blocks.

A council project team will oversee the scoping of the project and ensure that residents are at the heart of decision making. A feasibility study is currently being undertaken that will establish the exact requirements, this study will complete an energy survey of the tower blocks that will enable us to identify the most energy efficient solution for the buildings, that will save money for residents as well as reducing CO2 emissions.

The project is due on site in the Autumn of 2008.
