Registering for a council property
We administer the list of people who have applied for council housing and the initial assessment of Shared Ownership applications.
If you are already a Lambeth Council tenant please contact your housing office who will deal with you as a transfer list applicant.
Who can apply
Anyone who is over the age of 18 and normally resident in the UK. Anyone can be considered for housing, even if you live outside Lambeth.
Young people aged 16 and 17
Non-dependant applicants aged 16 and 17 may join the housing list if they require independent or semi-independent accommodation not provided by the Children and Young People’s Service. Examples include lone teenage parents under 18, and young people leaving care.
Offers made to young people under 18 will normally be of licenses to occupy accommodation, rather than tenancies.
Who can not apply
We will not be able to consider you for housing if you are:
- subject to immigration control
- guilty or have been guilty of unacceptable behaviour
- already a secure or introductory tenant of the council (see your local housing office who will deal with you as a transfer list applicant)
- dependant children
Who gets housed?
Please see our information on housing allocations and the points scheme.
How long will it take?
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a home to most of the people who apply to us for housing. Even for those we can help, it may mean that they wait a number of years before being housed. Our housing policy attempts to ensure that those households with the greatest and the most pressing need for housing get housed first, based on a points system.
Lambeth currently owns 31,965 individual homes (Lambeth residents endorsed a policy of positive stock retention although some stock is being transferred to Housing Associations to help us meet the Decent Homes Standard). Additionally, 15,642 homes are managed by 40 housing associations within the borough. There are an average of 11,000 households currently on the housing register waiting for housing. Last year we housed 85 housing register applicants.
How do I apply
You can download the Housing Register form and send this back to us at the return address at the bottom of this page.
If you have already registered but you have moved or had a change in your circumstances, please complete this form.
If you need to move because of health or the disabilities of someone you list on the form. You must complete both the Housing Register form and this Medical Assessment form. You must complete one medical form for each person that has a medical condition.
Medical Assessment form(s) must be sent together with the Housing Register form or they will be returned unless you have previously completed a Housing Register form and been issued with a registration number which you should write on your medical form.
If there is a later change in medical condition, you will need to fill in a new medical assessment form.
Please remember to put your reference number on all forms where applicable to help us with your housing register application.

If you become homeless or need more advice
If you are going to be homeless and have dependent children under the age of 18, a serious medical condition or are over 60 we advise you to arrange an interview with our Housing Options Team on 020 7926 4200.
The way housing is allocated in Lambeth has changed. No longer is it simply a method of getting what you are given. Lambeth has moved to a system called Choice Based Lettings.
