Rent Deposit Scheme
Our Rent Deposit Scheme aims to help prevent residents from becoming homeless by assisting those at risk to access private rented housing.
Finding somewhere to live is not always easy, but we are here to help you move into private rented accommodation in Lambeth that is right for you and your family.
We can support you every step of the way, from putting you in touch with estate agents, to helping you apply for Housing Benefit.
Who is eligible for the scheme?
The Rent Deposit Scheme is only available if you are referred. You cannot apply for it yourself. To be eligible for the scheme, you must meet all of the following conditions.
You must have a local connection and be:
- homeless or threatened with homelessness
- over 25
- likely to be in priority need
- able to live independently or with only minimal support
- able to demonstrate you can maintain a private sector tenancy
- able to demonstrate you can afford the rent for a private sector property, whether through Housing Benefit, Income Support or some other income.
In addition you should not:
- have been accepted as homeless under Part VII of the Homelessness Act 2002
- be intentionally homeless
- own your own home
- have any condition, addiction or illness which requires intensive levels of support.
What are the benefits of the scheme?
The Rent Deposit Scheme allows you to have more choice in the location, type, and quality of your new home and can help you lay the foundation for a successful long-term solution to your housing need. The rent deposit scheme:
- takes the responsibility for the rent deposit or bond payment
- offers you more choice of areas to live in
- offers a better choice of property type and quality
- does not charge any agency fees
- check your accommodation is safe
- ensures that properties have been inspected to meet council standards
- does not restrict you to just a single offer of accommodation, you can view several properties before making a final decision
- offers assistance to help you apply for and manage benefit payments
- assists you to find a home that is suitable for you and your family
- allows you to move sooner and therefore avoid having to spend long periods in temporary accommodation.
