West Norwood Major Development Opportunity (MDO38) Development Brief
On 20 December 2007, the council adopted a development brief for land at the centre of West Norwood.
The land and buildings are situated between York Hill, Norwood Road and Lansdowne Hill, and the site is identified in the Lambeth Unitary Development Plan (UDP) as a Major Development Opportunity (MDO38). The site has development potential to improve shopping facilities for West Norwood and provide new housing.
Consultation on the development brief was carried out in July and August of 2007 with almost 300 responses being received, and the final version of the brief takes these comments into account.
Key development principles in the brief include:
- new shopping facilities on Norwood Road
- new housing on upper floors
- a new community facility and a new public space
- provision of space for employment uses, and retaining or relocating current local businesses
- while the site is not in a conservation area, a high quality of design will be required
- new buildings should be sustainable and minimise energy use.
