Completing your application online

Computer keyboardThese notes contain information that you may find useful in completing your application so please read them carefully before you begin. The online system is organised into the following sections:

  • Main details
  • Work experience
  • Qualifications
  • Competency questions
  • References (two required)
  • Training and development
  • Equal opportunities

Before you begin

We decide whether or not to interview you for a job from the information you give us on your application form. So it is important that you give us clear and relevant information and that you answer all the questions.

Before you start, read the job description, person specification and any other information you have been sent. The job description will give you a good idea whether or not you think you would like to do the job, and the person specification tells you the skills and experience we are looking for. Applicants will be assessed on how they meet the requirements stated in the person specification. You might want to make a rough copy of your answers first so that you can decide exactly what you want to say before you complete the form itself.

You should submit your application before the closing date. If your application is successful you will be invited to attend an interview.

You will be asked some questions before you can start the on-line application process. Before you apply for any job at Lambeth you will need to provide the following information:

  • You will be asked to agree to our terms and conditions. By agreeing to the statement, you agree to Lambeth Council storing and processing your information.
  • You will be asked if you are related to the Chief Executive or other senior members of staff. Being related to a council employee will not prevent your application from being considered, we will use this information to ensure that none of your relatives are involved in the recruitment process.
  • You will be asked if you would like to be considered for the Two Ticks scheme. More information about Two Ticks can be found on our jobs and careers page.
  • If the post you are applying for is not exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) you will be required to give details of any 'spent' convictions. Further information can be found on our Rehabilitation of Offenders Act page.

Main details

It is important that you complete this section in full, as these details will be used to contact you if we need to invite you for an interview.

Work experience

Please provide details of your employment history covering at least the last 10 years, where possible. Start with your present or most recent employer giving the title of your job and the dates you were employed and then work backwards. Make sure the dates are correct and in the right order. You may also want to give details of any community, voluntary, or unpaid work you have undertaken. It is particularly important that you note any periods of unemployment so that we can consider your full history in making employment decisions.

Qualifications

Please give details of your education history since the age of eleven including college/university courses and any qualifications obtained. You will be asked to produce copies of relevant certificates of your qualifications prior to an offer of employment being confirmed.

Competency questions

This is a very important part of the application. It is your opportunity to demonstrate that you have the skills and experience we are looking for based on the person specification. You will need to answer each question within this section, so it is very important that you read the person specification carefully. Think how you meet the requirements and show how you meet each of the competencies giving examples where possible. Voluntary and unpaid work can be used in addition to more formal experience.

Further guidance and examples on providing evidence of your skills and abilities in the competencies section can be found on the demonstrating your competencies page. Please read through this page before completing this section.

References

References will only be taken up after the interview process has been completed. If you are working now or have been working, we require your present or most recent employer's name and address as an employment reference. For your second reference you may want to give us a past employer who can comment on your suitability. If you have just left school or have recently obtained your professional qualification, you may want to give your (head) teacher or tutor's name. For both references please state in what capacity you know the referee, for example if they are your manager or teacher.

Training and development

Please include in this section any training courses or development activities you have been involved with or attended. These may be courses provided by your employer or events you have participated in outside of work.

Equal opportunities monitoring

In order to make sure that our Dignity at Work policy is working effectively, and to measure the effectiveness of our advertising, monitoring information needs to be collected and analysed. This information is confidential and is monitored by Human Resources. It will not be used for selection purposes.

We would appreciate if you would complete the monitoring form attached to the application form so that we can keep track of how effective we have been at attracting and recruiting applicants from all sections of the community.

All information is confidential and will be treated separately from your application. It will be used for statistical purposes and workforce records only. Your co-operation in providing the information assists us in this process.
