Refurbishment of Brixton Recreation Centre

Photo of a girl jumpingThe £2.85 million refurbishment of Brixton Recreation Centre, Lambeth's flagship leisure centre, is now complete. The refurbished Rec is a vibrant and friendly family venue which will benefit the whole community for many years to come.

Greenwich Leisure Ltd have been the contractors running Brixton Rec since April 2007. They are a social enterprise that manages over fifty leisure centres within the M25, including centres in Camden, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Ealing and Hammersmith and Fulham. As a social enterprise, they invest any profits their leisure centres make into improving the facilities and services they offer.

What facilities are available in the new Rec?


Crèche and Play Zone 

CrècheOn level three there is a crèche and children's Play Zone for younger children.

The Zone
With the capacity to provide activities for up to 200 young people at any one time, The Zone comprises three areas; the Energy Zone, Fitness Zone and Team Zone.

Energy Zone (for ages 5 to 15)
TizzballOpened in October 2007, the Energy Zone is an area packed full of interactive games for children to play including:

  • Interactive Tizzball – a new game where children play in teams and throw balls at targets which light up 
  • Sportwall – a target wall where children score points by turning off lights 
  • Football and basketball – teams can play on the computerised pitch that cheers teams on and scores automatically 
  • Track and field – with a running track, high jump and long jump 
  • Climbing wall.

Fitness Zone (for ages 8 to 15)
Dance matsThe Fitness Zone is an adult free area where children can get fit in a safe and fun environment. They can choose from:

  • SHOKK fitness equipment designed especially for under 16s 
  • Computerised dance mats 
  • Exercise classes such as aerobics, yoga and street dance with a virtual instructor.

Team Zone (for all ages)
In the Team Zone is a state of the art third generation football pitch with artificial grass so whatever the weather outside games can go ahead.

Fitness Centre

  • The new fitness centre features state-of-the-art technogy and all the latest equipment, including a dedicated Aerobike and crewing area, and a separate programmable area.
  • There is also a dedicated resistance area with an additional functional and stretch area for Swiss balls, medicine balls, core boards and free weights.

Sauna and Steam Room

Changing Rooms

  • Refurbished pool side changing rooms and dry changing facilities for the Zone, fitness centre and general dry sports use.
