Herne Hill junction improvement scheme
Background to the scheme
Herne Hill Junction caused long traffic tail-backs and bus delays. It also encouraged dangerous and illegal traffic manoeuvres. It was very hazardous for pedestrians and provided an inadequate entrance to Brockwell Park.
Improvements
An improvement scheme has provided:
- safer pedestrian crossings
- improved entrance to Brockwell Park
- improved bus service
- additional cycling facilities
- part-pedestrianisation of Railton Road
- area-wide accessibility and public realm improvements.
Go to Herne Hill Junction map for more information.
Works
The project is now nearly finished with improvements including:
- upgrading Rymer Street and Hurst Street
- raising the zebra crossing and widening the footway in Milkwood Road
- upgrading Railton Road and closing it off to through-traffic
- adding a slip road between Norwood Road and Dulwich Road
- upgrading the area around the Brockwell Park entrance.
The major scheme is now completed with only minor works still to be done in Norwood Road and Dulwich Road.
The widening of Brockwell Passage remains a key item, however, this is subject to ongoing planning and legal applications.
We will do our best to keep disruption to a minimum and ensure that the work is carried out as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
