CCTV enforcement of parking and traffic contraventions
CCTV cameras help our Parking Services team to enforce both parking and traffic contraventions. This is one of the many measures that help to reduce congestion and pollution, as well as improving the reliability and punctuality of public transport.
CCTV enforcement uses fixed cameras and mobile units. You can take a look at the locations of the static cameras and their hours of operation. You can also see the location of the fixed cameras on the CCTV camera map.
Unless stated otherwise, these cameras monitor both bus lane and parking contraventions. The mobile units are clearly marked 'Lambeth CCTV' and are used to enforce both moving traffic and parking contraventions.
With the mobile units we can monitor areas where drivers are not adhering to the restrictions. This leads to an increase in awareness and as a result better traffic flow throughout the borough.
The contraventions which are enforced using CCTV come under the three catagories outlined below.
Bus lane contraventions
Bus lanes around London are clearly marked with road lines. The hours of operation are identified by road signs. Time of operation may vary and if there is no time on the sign this means that the bus lane operates at all times.
Bus lanes on red routes are enforced by Transport for London.
Moving traffic contraventions
Under the London Local Authorities Act 2003, the council now has the responsibility to enforce certain moving traffic contraventions.
These contraventions relate to traffic controls in the Highway Code which help reduce congestion and improve road safety. Contraventions include banned right turns, one way signs, box junctions and banned U-turns. You can see the full list in the moving traffic contraventions table.
This service involves people who use Lambeth’s roads and we would ask that you alert the council to areas of the borough where potentially dangerous driving is happening due to people ignoring some of these signs. You can do this by e-mailing us at streetopsqueries@lambeth.gov.uk
Parking contraventions
All parking contraventions can be enforced using CCTV cameras.
Parking on yellow zigzag lines outside schools during controlled hours of operation is a parking contravention. Using the mobile CCTV units to enforce this contravention has proved very successful and we work closely with the schools involved to ensure the safety of the children and parents.
When the mobile units are unable to attend, they continue being enforced by Civil Enforcment Officers (formerly known as parking attendants).
All of the above contraventions are supported by CCTV footage. If you have received a penalty charge notice and wish to view this footage then please contact the Lambeth Service Centre on 020 7926 9000 to arrange an appointment or request a postal copy. Please note that there is a £10 administration fee incurred for postal copies.
