Croydon Tramlink extension to Crystal Palace
Transport for London (TfL) recently held a public consultation on the route options for extending Tramlink to Crystal Palace. Three different route options were proposed between the Harrington Road tram stop and Crystal Palace Parade. The consultation ended on 18 December 2006.
TfL are currently collecting and reviewing all the comments received during the consultation. TfL will use this information to decide on a route for the extension and will run another consultation when this route has been designed in detail.
What are the benefits?
The extension to Crystal Palace would provide a service of up to six trams an hour to Croydon. The new extension would serve the East London Line Extension and other National Rail services at Crystal Palace rail station, and numerous bus services from Crystal Palace Parade. The new tram service would also reduce the journey time between Croydon and Crystal Palace to about 18 minutes.
The extension would give an economic boost to the Crystal Palace area by:
- Generating extra spending in the shops and restaurants of Anerley and Upper Norwood and an increase in employment
- Helping local people to take advantage of employment opportunities in Croydon and elsewhere
- Contributing to an increase in property prices
Market research completed in spring 2006 revealed that people thought the tram would deliver a reduction in pollution and congestion.
