Road Safety Education

We are responsible for the borough's road safety education plan and its delivery to the entire Lambeth community.

This is achieved by adopting a multi-agency approach, linking with Transport and Highways and Education within the council, and external bodies such as the Department for Transport, GLA, and the Health Authority.

Casualty reduction

Lambeth's Road Safety Education Unit offers advice and support on a variety of road safety issues.

Our aim is to reduce both the number of road traffic accidents, and the severity of those injured in such accidents, in line with the Government's Casualty Reduction Targets.

The targets, to be achieved by 2010, are:

  • to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured by 40%
  • to reduce the number of children killed or seriously injured by 50%
  • to reduce the number of slight casualties by 10% compared to the 1994 - 1998 average.

These targets will be achieved through a combination of engineering, education and enforcement.

We are working closely with the Transport and Highways Department to look at engineering methods to make streets safer; reducing speed limits to 20 mph, and introducing traffic calming measures.
