Brixton town centre improvements

Depiction of a Brixton street scene following the town centre improvementsPavement overcrowding and general congestion in Brixton is set to become a thing of the past as work begins on an ambitious redevelopment programme for Brixton Road. Starting in April 2008, the Transport for London (TfL) scheme is expected to take about nine months to complete.

Residents, businesses and visitors to Brixton will be able to enjoy huge improvements to the section of road between Stockwell Road and Coldharbour Lane. Some of the changes include wider pavements with less clutter, new and improved places to cross, wider bus lanes and new cycle stands. The aim of the scheme is to make the area a safer and more pleasant environment for local shoppers and tourists.

The construction work will be carried out in these stages in 2008:

  • Stage 1 – Central Island works - 5 weeks (May)
  • Stage 2a – Pavement works - 7 weeks (June/July)
  • Stage 2b – Pavement works - 8 weeks (June/July)
  • Stage 3a – Pavement works - 11 weeks (July/August/September)
  • Stage 3b – Pavement works - 4 weeks (July – partly night-time working)
  • Stage 4a – Pavement works - 8 weeks (September/October/November)
  • Stage 4b – Pavement works - 12 weeks (August/September/October)
  • Stage 5 – Re-surfacing and lining works - 3 weeks (November/December).

The Brixton Town Centre project is part of TfL's £10 billion investment programme to improve London's transport system and enhance the urban environment.
