Investment in the borough's roads

We have earmarked more than £2.6 million for a major programme to repair resurface roads and footpaths this year.

Three freezing winters on the trot have wrought havoc to road and footpath surfaces across the country, but despite the tough economic climate we have ensured that funding is available to resurface the worst affected roads this year.

The funding is being directed at the roads in the borough that are the in the worst condition. Those to be resurfaced are:

  • Durand Gardens
  • Woodfield Avenue
  • Woodland Road
  • Poplar Walk
  • Poplar Road
  • Baytree Road
  • Normandy Road
  • Clarence Avenue
  • Rommany Road
  • Birbeck Hill
  • Madeira Road
  • Deerdale Road
  • Lyham Road
  • Bankton Road
  • Chantrey Road
  • Streatham Common North.

In addition to the £2.6m set aside by us for resurfacing, the Department for Transport has allocated the borough a further £176,500 which will be used to resurface complete lengths of road, or treat parts of roads which are in need of urgent repair after the winter season.

This funding will be used to fully resurface Birbeck Place, Broadlands Avenue, Voss Court and make substantial repairs to Leigham Court Road, Norwood High Street, Streatham Vale, Rookery Road, Dulwich Road and Kings Avenue.

Cllr Lorna Campbell, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said: "Much of the funding is concentrated in the south of the borough, which has been particularly badly affected by the successive cold winters."

As well as the nearly £3m of planned investment for resurfacing, we have set aside around £700,000 to deal with emergency repairs of potholes across the borough this winter.
