Travelling in bad weather advice
If you have to travel in bad weather please see some handy tips as follows:
- check weather warnings with the Met Office
- only travel if your trip is really necessary
- allow plenty of time for your journey.
By car
If travelling by car:
- check the weather forecast and the travel news before you leave
- try to wait until the roads have been gritted before travelling
- read the Highway Code for advice on driving in bad weather
- take extra caution around gritters and do not be tempted to overtake
- in snow and icy conditions allow extra room and reduce speed
- be equipped with warm clothing, food, water, mobile phone and a torch
- if possible let someone know when you expect to arrive.
On foot
If travelling on foot:
- wear appropriate footwear and wrap up warm
- avoid walking on pavements if they are in the shade as they may be slippery
- tread carefully on icy surfaces that have been thawed by the sun as they can still be slushy and slippery.
By bicycle
Try not to cycle in severe weather conditions, especially where ice formation occurs, but if you choose to cycle we recommend as follows:
- be extra cautious as ice can be hazardous – use bicycle lights and wear high visibility equipment
- follow main roads or other gritted roads as gritters will not cover bike routes unless they are part of the treated road network - bike routes are often too narrow even for the hopper
- be very careful when cycling around a corner and proceed slowly
- keep warm.
