Workplace travel plan ideas for businesses
There are a range of things that an individual business might wish to consider in relation to enhancing the travel and transport operations of its business. While not exhaustive and possibly not appropriate to all businesses the following list is intended as a guide.
General
- Ensure that transport and travel is a key part of the induction process
- Introduce a personalised travel planning service where staff can obtain specific tailored information for their own journeys.
- Nominate a staff travel co-ordinator
- Promote an “emergency ride home” scheme for people who are working late or relying on others (e.g. car sharing).
Promoting walking and cycling
- Provide personal alarms, pedometers and cycle equipment
- Arrange self defence courses
- Provide cycle parking
- Install shower and changing facilities
- Supply pool bikes
- Offer a cycle user allowance and bike loan scheme
- Advertise Lambeth’s Cycle Confidence Training Programme
- Arrange bicycle maintenance courses
- Make cycle maps available
- Secure cycle and walking retailer discounts.
Encouraging the use of other sustainable modes of transport
- Provide free travelcards or season loans to purchase a travelcard
- Provide pool oyster cards for staff
- Arrange for staff to access Transport for London’s journey planner
- Make staff aware of Transport for London’s free travel alert service and the Traveline number - 020 7222 1234
- Supply public transport timetable and fare information
- Promote campaigns such as good going and safer travel at night
- Use newsletters, e-mail, and other staff mediums to keep staff updated on transport and travel initiatives.
Discouraging non-essential motor vehicle use
- Provide the same mileage allowance irrespective of engine size
- Do not provide re-imbursement for parking or the congestion charging zone
- Encourage car sharing
- Promote car clubs
- Provide environmentally friendly pool vehicles
- Make available motorcycle parking.
Reducing the need to travel
- Promote news ways of working. For example, flexi-time, working from home and compressed hours.
- Recruit locally
- Use e-mail, telephone and other technologies so that meetings aren’t required as often.
