School crossing patrols

Photograph of a School Crossing Patrol OfficerThe school crossing patrol service provides vital safe crossing points on a child's journey to and from school across the borough.

Officers perform an important and well-respected role in the community, and their presence at key locations enhances the borough's 'safe route to school' strategy.

Background to the service

The school crossing patrol service was instituted in 1954 through the School Crossing Patrol Order 1954, which followed the passing of the School Crossing Patrol Act the previous year.

It was originally founded because of the perceived need for society to make provision for the safety of children walking to and from school.

It was, and still is, based on the concept of part-time employees undertaking the duty of seeing children across the road at specific sites on their journey to and from school (or between parts of a school) between the hours of 8am and 5.30pm.

The Road Traffic Act 1984, section 28, defines the circumstances in which a School Crossing Patrol officer has the power to stop traffic; although this was recently amended in the Transport Act 2000, to enable anyone to cross the road at any time of the day.

We took over the running of the School Crossing Patrol Service, from the Metropolitan Police, in April 2000 with all the staff transferring at this time.
