London cycle hire scheme: Cycle London

Artist's impression of a docking stationThe Mayor of London recently announced details of Cycle London - a London cycle hire scheme to be launched in May 2010.

About the scheme

The London cycle hire scheme will allow you to pick up a cycle at a docking station, use it as you like, and then return it to any docking station.

The scheme in Lambeth

We have been working closely with Transport for London (TfL) to find potential locations for docking stations and cycles. TfL have identified a zone which for Lambeth covers an area north of borough - Prince's, Bishop's and Oval wards.

TfL's aspirations are to have 8 to 10 docking stations per square kilometre across the whole zone. This is to make sure that there is an even spread of bicycles and will ensure users can always find somewhere to drop off their hire bike.

Currently, 33 sites have been identified in Lambeth. The next step is for these to be consulted on. The target number of sites in Lambeth is 26. This means that not all locations will proceed.

Each site will need to get planning permission and traffic management orders before they can be erected and the sites can go live.

Have your say on the scheme

Before installing docking stations, TfL needs to apply for planning permission, as well as seeking Traffic Regulation Orders, for each site.

This will allow those of you who live or work near to a proposed location for a docking station to comment on the proposals.

Let us know what you think about the proposed cycle docking station sites in North Lambeth. Go to our consultation page for more information:

All residents and businesses in Prince's, Oval and Bishop's ward will receive a leaflet describing the scheme in brief and how to find out more information on the scheme. The public will also have an opportunity to find out more about the cycle scheme at two information exhibitions. These are being held at:

  • Tuesday 24 February, 5 to 7.30pm - Lillian Baylis College, 323 Kennington Lane, London SE11 5QY
  • Wednesday 25 February, 5 to 7.30pm - Johanna Primary School, Johanna Street, Lower Marsh, London SE1 7RH

If you have any comments on these sites please email: dhaines@lambeth.gov.uk or send them to: Transport Policy Manager, 1st Floor Blue Star House, 234 - 244 Stockwell Road, SW9 9SP.
