Planned works

For footway resurfacing, on the grounds of obtaining best value and minimising risk, existing surfacing materials will typically be replaced with like-for-like materials. However, decisions around materials selection will be made on a scheme-by-scheme basis, taking into account technical and geometrical conditions, local character and aesthetics, sustainability considerations and value.

For carriageway resurfacing, we will replace the existing asphalt surface with a new asphalt surface to increase the life of the road.

How we plan the works

When preparing our programme of works, we will check if any other project (e.g. drainage works or utility works) is being planned for the same location. Where possible, the two projects will be brought together to reduce disruption to residents and costs.

Keeping residents updated

Residents in affected roads will be notified with a letter in advance of any works due to take place. The contractor who will be undertaking the work will also send out a letter ten days in advance that will advise you if you need to do anything, such as moving your car etc.

Road closures

Which roads are closed depends on a few factors like the size of the road and the type of work being undertaken. If your road will need to be closed, then you will be notified in advance. Closed roads will be clearly signed, and all efforts will be made to minimise disruption.

Affect on bus services

In all cases we will try to keep roads open during the works so there should be no change to the bus services. However, if a road has to be closed or a bus stop moved, then Lambeth Council will work closely with TFL to minimise disruption.

How roads are chosen

Every two years an assessment of all the road conditions in the borough is undertaken by an independent surveyor. Factors such as the proximity of the road to important local services e.i. schools, hospitals or places of worship, level of traffic and the public transport network are also considered. Each road is then given a score and those which score highest are actioned.

Each road is given careful consideration. However, we need to prioritise the roads and footpaths which have the greatest need for resurfacing. If your road was not chosen, it might be the case that it'll be chosen in the next year’s programme.
