1. Apply for a personal licence to sell alcohol

A personal licence allows individuals to supply alcohol where a premises licence or a temporary event notice is in force. Not every person at an establishment that supplies alcohol needs to be a personal licence holder but most premises licences require every sale of alcohol to be authorised by a personal licence holder.

In addition all premises that hold a premises licence must also have a designated premises supervisor, (DPS). The DPS must be a personal licence holder. Personal licence holders are able to make a greater number of temporary event notices. Please complete a personal licence application.

2. Renew a personal licence to sell alcohol

Personal licences are now valid indefinitely due to the Deregulation Act 2015 which came into effect on the 1 April 2015.

What you need to know...

  • You can still use your existing licence even though it appears to have expired.

  • You can get your licence updated to remove the expiry date

3. Remove expiry date on your personal licence

You do not have to remove the expiry date as all responsible authorities are aware that the licence is now indefinite, however if you still wish to have the expiry date removed from your personal licence card then we will need the following:

  • A written request to replace your licence, providing your full name, address.
  • Your existing licence or an explanation as to why it cannot be returned.
  • The £10.50 administration fee. This can be paid by either a cheque or postal order made payable to the ‘London Borough of Lambeth'.

4. Change name or address on your personal licence

We have an application form for you to change your name. We will require the following with your form

  • your old personal licence (both the card part and paper part)
  • a fee of £10.50 (please make cheques payable to 'London Borough of Lambeth')

5. Change photograph on your personal licence

You do not have to update your photo but you may run into difficulties if you no longer resemble the photograph printed on your personal licence. Therefore we strongly recommend that you get your photo updated at least every 10 years (in line with the requirements of driving licences and passports). As with any change to a personal licence, this will incur a £10.50 administration fee. You need only pay a single fee if making multiple changes at the same time i.e. name or address.

Where relevant please include in or enclose with your letter:

  • your full name
  • your full address
  • new photographs, at least one of which should be endorsed
  • your old personal licence (both the card part and paper part)
  • a fee of £10.50 (please make cheques payable to 'London Borough of Lambeth)
  • daytime contact details in case we need to get in touch with you.

You can post your application to the Licensing department

6. Lost or stolen personal licences

In the event of your personal licence being lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, you can request a copy of your licence from us by letter, provided that we issued the original licence.

Your letter requesting a replacement needs to be accompanied by the correct fee of £10.50, and where appropriate, a full explanation or statement declaring why you no longer have your personal licence. Please provide as much details as possible, for example your full name, address, and licence number (if known).

If you are not requesting any changes to your personal licence at the same time as requesting a duplicate, this will be sent to the address we have on file and we will not usually require any further information.

If you need to change details at the same time as requesting a duplicate personal licence (for example, if you have moved to a new address) we will need you to complete a change of name or address form.
