Being a Parent — Enjoying Family Life

Being a Parent - Enjoying Family Life is a new project for parents and caregivers who of children aged 2 – 11 years and are concerned about the impact of their emotional wellbeing on parenting.

Empowering Parents Empowering Communities want to learn the best way to support parents & caregivers who:

  • experience emotional and/or relationship difficulties (e.g. struggle to trust in relationships, get overwhelmed by their emotions, struggle to switch off, frequently lose their temper, feel lonely and isolated)
  • may have experienced challenging or invalidating relationships growing up
  • have a child aged between 2-11 years and are worried about their child’s behaviour

To do this, we are running a research study comparing Being a Parent - Enjoying Family Life to the standard Being a Parent group.

Both parenting programmes cover topics such as communication skills, coping with stress, play and understanding children’s behaviour. Being a Parent - Enjoying Family Life also helps parents/caregivers explore the impact of emotional wellbeing on parenting and provides skills to manage strong feelings in you and your child and strengthen family relationships.

Interested parents/caregivers will receive either Being a Parent - Enjoying Family Life or the standard Being a Parent parenting programme on the basis of chance, like tossing a coin. The group you will receive will be decided randomly by a computer.

The groups run over 9-10 weeks for 2 hours and fit in around the school term time. In person groups run for 2 hours and online groups run for 1 hour 30 minutes. A creche will be provided if required.

Parents/caregivers will also be asked to complete online questionnaires and an at home interview before, after and 6 months after attending the group. You will receive up to £85 for your participation in these questions.

If you have any questions about the study, you can contact Ellie Baker (research coordinator) at
