You can request a refund if your Council Tax account is in credit.

This could happen if you have:

  • overpaid
  • moved to another address
  • been awarded a discount or an exemption
  • been awarded Council Tax Support.

Your account may also be in credit if the Valuation Office have reduced the band of your property.

How we pay the money back

Refunds are usually paid directly into the bank account of the person or persons who’s name is on the Council Tax bill.

If you pay by Direct Debit we will refund the bank account the payment comes from.

If you move within Lambeth, we may transfer any credit to your new account. But you can ask for it to be transferred back and refunded.

Before you start

You’ll need to have your Council Tax reference number to hand before you start this application.

If you don’t know your account number, you can find it on a copy of your Council Tax bill or bank statement if you pay by Direct Debit.

Everyone who is named on the Council Tax account must agree to the refund request. We may ask you to provide proof that every named person on the account has agreed to the refund request.

Providing proof

If any of the following applies please attach written confirmation as described below:

  1. If your most recent payments were made by telephone payment, debit card or credit card in the last six months. Please provide a copy of your bank or credit card statement showing the payments that total your credit. You should ensure that you blank out anything that isn’t related to your council tax payment before you send us your statement. However please do not blank out your bank sort code and account number as these are needed to confirm where your payments have come from.

  2. If the account is in the name of a company, please provide description of the claim request on company headed paper or from an authorised company email address.

  3. Where a charge payer has passed away, please provide proof of probate to enable us to issue a refund.
