Our State of the Borough 2016 provides an overview of the social context, the population and its changing nature, household composition, tenure & affordability, breakdown of residents by equality characteristics, poverty & deprivation, health & life expectancy, crime and the economic situation.

How Lambeth compares

If you want to know how the services you use perform against other councils, you can use the LG Inform tool which provides up-to-date published data about Lambeth and its performance, as well as of other councils across the country, where that data can be benchmarked with other local authorities.

2. What we know about local residents

The Lambeth Residents Survey 2016 provides an overview of what matters to residents, their levels of satisfaction with the area, perceptions of change and neighbourliness, safety and crime and health, what Council services they use, their perceptions of the Council and how they want to work with other people.

You can also use the Area Classification Tool to enable you to map the borough by different customer segments. These segments have been created by a combination of over 60 Census variables. You can discover the characteristics of each segment, compare the proportion of segments by borough or even ward.

You could use this tool to find similar areas to compare performance of key services and share best practice, to private sector profiling of areas for potential investment and third sector targeting of resources to maximum effect.

3. What we know about inequality in Lambeth

The Cumulative Equalities Impact Assessment seeks a much fuller understanding of our residents and what local and national policies mean for them. In this way, we will not only use our resources as best we can, but will also look at how we deal with the causes of problems as well as their effects. The appendix sets out in detail how Lambeth is changing in respect of the key trends which we believe will have greatest effect on the lives of our residents.

5. What we know about our wards

The Ward Profiles and Atlas Tool provide a range of demographic data for each ward. It is designed to provide an overview of the population in these areas by presenting data on the population, diversity, households, life expectancy, housing, crime, benefits, land use, deprivation & employment.

The Ward Profiles present summary measures for the most recent year. This is a useful tool for displaying a large amount of data for numerous geographies.

The Ward Atlas presents a more detailed version of the data including trend data and generally includes the raw numbers as opposed to percentages or rates.

6. What we know about local businesses

The Lambeth Business Survey 2015 provides an overview of business demographic information, the business economy, business aspirations, views on running a business in the area, opportunities and challenges they face, business ownership, employment, staff recruitment and engagement with the Council. 7. What we know about our communities

8. Black Caribbean

Black Caribbean residents are a large and vibrant part of the community in Lambeth. The borough has the second highest proportion of Black Caribbean residents in the country after Lewisham.

Ethnographic research has been undertaken to explore in detail the individual stories of the experiences of some of our Black Caribbean residents and those factors that might explain dissatisfaction within this particular community. We have also trained up local Black Caribbean residents to act as peer researchers, and asked them to provide the council with greater insight into the experiences and views of the Black Caribbean communities in Lambeth.

As part of this research a film was produced in which Black Caribbean residents talk about their relationship with the council and our services. View the 'Black Caribbean residents have their say' film on YouTube.

9. Eritrean

We have carried out research into the needs of the Eritrean communities in Lambeth and Southwark, which was undertaken by members of the Eritrean community, supported by Lambeth Council. The research covers issues including: community safety, housing, employment and training, health, and services for children and young people, and provides evidence on the needs of this community.

10. Gypsy and Traveller

Historically, we have had very little information about the Gypsy and Traveller community living in Lambeth, specifically those on the site at Lonesome Way in Streatham. In the research we carried out we found out more about the site and the community living there, including their needs. This ethnographic research has been used as a basis for developing an action plan to tackle the issues that came to light in the research.

11. LGBT

We present the findings of a study of the experiences of Lesbians, Gay men, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) men and women who live, work and socialise in Lambeth. It presents the results of part of a larger study which included analysis of Lambeth’s policies and procedures, stakeholder interviews and staff focus groups.

12. Polish

Polish people have become a major presence within Lambeth, especially in Streatham, where there are an increasing number of Polish shops and restaurants. However, this visibility is in stark contrast to the representation of Poles within local political forums and decision making processes, where the community is virtually silent.

Research has been undertaken to find out more about the Polish community, are the Poles who are making their homes in the borough happy to keep a low profile, or do they lack the tools and experience to make themselves heard? What are the concerns of Polish people in Lambeth and what change would they like to see. The research was undertaken to give the council an understanding of how it can best work with Polish residents to identify solutions that the community can take forward.

13. Portuguese

Research has been conducted on the Portuguese community in Lambeth and a separate study has been carried out on this community for Stockwell.

14. Somali

Over the last ten years, Streatham and Stockwell have emerged as centres for the Somali community in Lambeth with shops, cafés and other services. The sale and use of khat by Somalis was implicated as a factor in community tensions in 2004. In 2006, London Borough of Lambeth Drug and Alcohol Team (DAT) commissioned the Lambeth Khat Project, a partnership project between the DAT, FanonCare, London Somali Development Partnership (LSDP), and East African Health Concern (EAHC).

15. Transgender

This research uses an ethnographic approach to complement existing local and national knowledge of the lives and needs of transgender (‘trans’) people. In this report we look at the barriers trans people face in accessing public services, their relationship with the voluntary sector and experiences of ‘transphobia’, to name a few issues.

16. Women and girls

According to the National Domestic Violence Helpline data, the number of calls received from Lambeth to their helpline, was the second highest among all local authorities. This report identifies the prevalence of violence against women and girls, specialist service provision and the future direction of a co-ordinated community response in Lambeth. As a result of this research a set of recommendations and an action plan were developed to help reduce the prevalence of violence against women and girls in Lambeth.

17. What we know about health and wellbeing

The Lambeth Joint Strategic Needs Assessment is a process that identifies the current and future health and wellbeing and social care needs of the local population. The JSNA also considers what assets local communities within Lambeth can offer in terms of skills, experience and resources.

The Public Health Profiles and the Local Health Tool provides you with access to interactive maps and reports on a variety of different issues, from deprivation to health, at local authority level and at a smaller area levels, such as MSOA and ward, as well as Clinical Commissioning Group level.

You can visualise the data through a map, as well as download the data. You can also combine areas to create your own geographies and view the information and reports for these areas, as well as compare how your area performs against the national average.

18. Take part in our Local Insight Programme

We are developing a Local Insight Programme to help commissioners, policy makers and analysts share & learn how local authorities can use data & insight to make better decisions, be that to better understand need, demand or impact.

19. What Lambeth could look like in the future

The Infrastructure 2050 Tool enables you to visualise future infrastructure between now and 2050, including town centres, housing zones, green belt and transport. It also shows planned infrastructure from retail to residential and you can plot by year as well as by financial value. You can also compare population and jobs growth, as well as compare with other boroughs.

You could use this tool to understand future demand and supply in particular areas and plan where infrastructure is needed, particularly where there may be gaps.
