You can stand as a councillor if you live, work or own property in the borough for which you are standing for election.

Once an election is officially announced you can contact the Electoral Services Office and ask for an information pack and set of nomination papers. Elections for the council are held every four years. The next full local council elections will take place on Thursday 22nd May 2014. Nominations will open in March 2014.

What you need to know...

To become a councillor you need to be nominated. You need to find 10 people who live in the ward you wish to become a councillor in. They must be on the Register of Electors for the ward and agree to sign your nomination paper.

You will also need to keep a record of the money you spend during your campaign as law governs the amount you can spend and you have to provide this information after the election.
