This site provides a show of colour visible from the roadside and lots of pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies.
Nearly two hundred tough ‘prairie plants’ were planted in two litre pots directly into the existing turf and added hundreds of bulbs.
We could not have done this without help from local volunteers, the Streatham Common Co-operative Partnership, and the hard-working environment club from St Julian’s School.
Together we covered an area of around 500 square metres with plants including:
- Achillea ‘Sassy Lemon Summer’
- Agastache ‘Black Adder’
- Nepeta ‘Six Giant Hills’
- Echinops ‘Platinum Blue’
- Geranium ‘Southcombe Double’.
The work was carried out in autumn 2023. Like the other Bee Roads, this strip at Holderness Estate will be left to grow long through spring and summer, and managed with a late summer cut, to stop invasive weeds taking over.
