To take over the decisions your parents or carer would usually make, you need to be over compulsory school age, which is at the end of the school year that you become 16.
Your right to make decisions could be affected by your mental capacity, for example, how well you would be able to manage your own money and budget.
Different types of budgets
- Personal health budget – this is for your NHS health care and support needs.
- Personal budget - this is for your social care and support needs (if aged 16 or 17).
- If you are aged 18 and over, see adult personal budgets.
How to manage your budget
You can ask your support worker, or (if you are still in full-time education), your teacher, to teach you how to manage a budget.
