Philharmonia Orchestra

The Philharmonia is one of the world’s leading orchestras, with almost 80 years’ experience in providing access to and encouraging music participation.

Their learning programmes extend reach, diversify audiences and break down barriers to participation.

Hear and Now is an established intergenerational community programme that has been running in Bedford and Leicester for almost 15 years. It brings together carers, people living with dementia and memory loss, and young musicians from grassroots community organisations. To support this, the Philharmonia will work with Arts for Dementia, who will act as referral delivery partner.

Through a series of workshops, participants will contribute spoken and musical ideas, emotions, movement, memories and ambitions. This creative process provides a therapeutic element for participants living with dementia, improves understanding and communication with younger participants, and enables isolated people to build valuable relationships with others from their local community.

Participants provide the inspiration for, and directly contribute to, the music and performance elements of the final piece.
